Professional and Safety Training Program for a small manufacturing company located in St. Augustine, FL
Problem
After facing the threat of low returns on investment and stakeholder concerns, a small manufacturing company reached out to me to analyze their training needs for both office and floor staff.
AS9100D Standard Training Program
The main focus of this program concerned aligning their training with AS9100D Standards and OSHA safety requirements.

Strategy
- Interviewed major stakeholders to determine company-wide goals, training goals, and stakeholder needs and expectations. For example, stakeholders requested in-person facilitation training materials, rather than SCORM or digital learning tools.
- Read the most recent AS 9100D documents and processes.
- Reviewed previous training materials to determine what already exists (New Hire).
- Created an customer analysis and work proposal (See Example here).
Outcomes
- SharePoint site – created a SharePoint site to house training documents, knowledge checks, AS9100D and Safety data sheets, and employee training records.
- Audience Analysis – wrote a detailed proposal with suggested training materials; some training can be purchased through pre-made HR systems, but most of the training needs to be specific to the culture, compliance requirements, and needs of the small manufacturing company.
- Interviewed Subject Matter Experts – submitted questionaires to subject matter experts (the mode of communication they indicated they wanted to utilize) including process questions, suggestions for how to convey information, and training scenarios to give employees practical, experiential training.
- Style Guide – using ppt and through consultation with stakeholders developed a style guide for the training materials.
- Training Materials – using information from subject matter experts wrote 15 training courses including ppt slide decks, scripts, knowledge checks, and scenario-based examples for AS9100D processes. Examples of Courses listed below:
- Handling, Storage, Packaging
- Floor Orientation
- Product Identification and Traceability
- Safety
- Corrective Preventative Action
- Inspection Testing
- New Employee Training – developed a slide deck, script, and knowledge check for new employees.
- Post- training analysis – after creating the training courses, wrote analysis to let stakeholders know where gaps exist between AS9100D requirements and in-house compliance steps.
Deliverables
Statement of Work: This statement of work was developed based on the initial analysis of the learning content, conversations with major stakeholders, and consultant’s expertise on program design. This document also contains the analysis report, audience needs evaluation, and proposed courses.
Style Guide: Because official in-house training had not been consistently created or utilized, a style guide was created for the purpose of creating consistent, and authoritative training content.
Interview Worksheet: Using the official AS9100D document and the already existing quality control process documents, an interview worksheet was created for each proposed course topic area. This document served as a way for subject matter experts (quality control personnel) to communicate with the instructional design consultant.
Courses: Using the information provided by subject matter experts, training courses were created, including slide decks, scripts, and knowledge checks.
